the first asian mamas working in the arts (amwa) zine will explore the notion of family. as members of the pan-asian diaspora rooted in los angeles, we find ourselves as both the end and the continuation of a journey. these stories of arrival are our own, our parents’, our grandparents’, or great-grandparents’.  brought by boat or by plane, in exile or in refuge, with hope and ambition, the baggage that made it here is our inheritance.

this baggage, beautiful, traumatic, or both, is ingrained in us and informs how we move through the world. we invite you to view this call for submissions as an opportunity to own, transform, celebrate, and address the familiar refrain: “where are you from?”

submissions by women-identifying and gender nonconforming folks of asian pacific islander desi descent based in los angeles are welcome.
