amwa (formerly asian mamas working in the arts) is a los angeles based collective of femme and/or non-binary pan-asian art workers. together we experiment with ways that art and design might be used to support progressive movement building.
started in 2015, amwa was created in response to a need for us to get together in an intimate setting to support each other as we navigated and negotiated our relationships with predominantly white institutions (pwi’s). what started as a small series of dinners, has since grown into a large and dynamic community. we are students, teachers, curators, choreographers, dancers, painters, designers, artists, and community organizers. ranging from vulnerable to privileged, our members hold many identities throughout the diaspora.
