“kuleana” is the hawaiian word for spiritual responsibility. in a clash between hawaiian values and the american dream, two childhood friends from maui, nohea and kim, are faced with an important mission to save their beloved island from a deceitful real-estate developer. nohea is a disabled vietnam war veteran who struggles to reconcile his ancestral roots with his new present day identity in 1971. kim, on the other hand, mysteriously returns to maui, after being tragically presumed as dead at age 10, with a mission of her own. the two learn the most important lesson:kuleana is not a burden; it is a privilege.
