(Los Angeles, CA) – Case Study Los Angeles III: CHROMATIC BLACK, opening on Aug. 12, 2017 at Gallery CLU is curated by Devon Tsuno, artist and founder of Concrete Walls Projects. This group exhibition is the third installment of Case Study Los Angeles, a series of exhibitions highlighting the diversity of artists and themes central to the cultural infrastructure of LA. This year’s exhibition titled CHROMATIC BLACK focuses on the dynamic range of black and white contemporary art by: Sally Chung, Pablo Estrada, Janice Gomez, Kio Griffith, Jaybe Lee, Miwah Lee, Kevin Reinhardt, def.sound, Mikey Tnasuttimonkol, Trina Turturici, and Ji Hyun Won.

Sally Chung’s large-scale ink paintings on paper are portraits of women utilizing symbolism and text creating a new contemporary Korean American folklore. In contrast Tina Turturici’s new large series of small ink drawings on paper focus on a range of possibilities where abstraction meets non-linear narrative. Photographers Pablo Estrada, Jaybe Lee, and Mikey Tnasuttimonkol document the ocean waves, back roads, celebrities and ballroom rooms of Los Angeles with black and white film from the insider’s perspective of an Angeleno, but from the outsider’s perspective of someone looking from the outside in.

Janice Gomez’s performance and video installation also engages visitors to interact with her as an outsider by sitting in a reconstructed room within the gallery while watching a black and white video. The performance a reprise of her 2016/2017 work at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), is a one-night only event during the opening reception.

Opening night performances will also include the release of a new playlist and live performance by the eclectic hip hop and visual artist def.sound who was recently named one of the 10 Artists to Watch in 2017 by the LA Weekly. Kio Griffith’s graphite drawing of LA jazz legend Charles Mingus, Kevin Reinhardt’s KJAZZ radio ceramic sculptures, Ji Hyun Won’s pulsating Bauhaus influenced abstract painting and Miwah Lee’s 35mm photograph titled Leather on Leather present evidence that in LA the creative music and visual art communities live and work communally.

This series of exhibitions previously hosted at PØST and JAUS galleries is a nomadic project established in 2011 with the goal of highlighting underrepresented work within the greater Los Angeles area. Gallery CLU is pleased to host Concrete Walls Projects and the photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, sounds and video installation presented by these 11 artists. The curator Devon Tsuno is an artist and LA native. His curatorial project Concrete Walls Projects has been reviewed in the LA Times and includes a history of exhibitions and collaborative projects throughout LA since 2004.
